This September, Richmond’s canal was transformed into a river of yellow for one of the city’s most unique traditions: the RVA Duck Race & Festival of Inclusion. Thousands of rubber ducks were released into the water, cheered on by families lining the canal, kids picking their “favorite racer,” and an entire city enjoying the spectacle together.
At Nunnally’s Tree Service, we were proud to be part of it all, both as sponsors, and as the team that operated the crane to launch the race itself!
A Sea of Yellow, A City United
The moment the ducks were released from the starting line was unforgettable. Our crew at Nunnally’s maneuvered the crane that tipped the giant container, sending thousands of ducks splashing into the canal. From kayakers guiding the ducks to children pointing out which one they thought might win, the atmosphere was pure Richmond fun.
But, beyond the cheers and laughter, this quirky event had a deeper purpose: raising funds for causes that strengthen and uplift our community. That’s what made it truly special.

Why We Sponsor Events Like This
At Nunnally’s, we spend a lot of time caring for the trees and landscapes that make our neighborhoods beautiful. Our mission, however, has always gone beyond tree care: our mission is ultimately about people.
Supporting the RVA Duck Race is one way we give back to the communities that trust us with their homes, businesses, and green spaces. Sponsorship helps ensure events like this continue to bring families together while also supporting organizations that make a real difference.
Fun, Safe, and Environmentally Friendly
If you’re wondering about the ducks in the waterway, don’t worry: every single one was collected after the race. The event organizers made sure Richmond’s waterways were left as clean as they were before the big splash. Fun traditions like this can always go hand in hand with caring for our environment.
Looking Ahead
The RVA Duck Race was more than just a spectacle on the water; it was a celebration of community, inclusion, and giving back. From the kids with wide eyes on the riverbank to the volunteers making it all possible, it reminded us why Richmond is such a special place to call home.
We were honored not only to sponsor this year’s event, but to play such a hands-on role in making it possible. We’re already looking forward to next year’s race, and to finding more ways to support the people and events that make our region shine.
Until then, thank you to everyone who made this event a success. You inspire us to keep doing our part to serve our community; one tree (and maybe one duck) at a time!
